SEM for Car Dealers

Car Dealer SEM and Dealership PPC Management

Car dealer SEM means paying to appear in Google and Bing results when shoppers search for the models, used stock and service work your dealership sells. HeyLead runs that paid search for franchise and independent dealerships. Each department gets its own campaign: new vehicles, used vehicles, service and parts. Campaigns are tied to your live stock, so ads pause when a car sells. We track calls, form leads, chat and booked service appointments back to the campaign that produced them. You can see which spend sells cars and which only buys clicks. Any OEM co-op and Tier 3 advertising guidelines you share with us are built in from the start.

How we structure SEM for a dealership

Campaigns are split by department and by what the shopper wants. Brand campaigns protect your dealership name. New vehicle campaigns target make and model searches such as '[make] [model] for sale [city]' or '[model] lease deals'. Used campaigns target body style, price and model searches like 'used trucks under [price] near me'. Service campaigns target 'oil change [city]', '[make] service center' and 'brake repair near me', with call ads so the service desk phone rings. Where allowed, conquest campaigns bid on competing models rather than rival dealer names. Performance Max and Google vehicle ads run from your inventory feed. We keep them separate from your brand campaign, so their results are not inflated by shoppers who already know you.

Inventory feeds and VIN level vehicle ads

Shoppers want to see a real car, price and mileage before they click. We connect your inventory provider or DMS export to Google Merchant Center. Each VIN can then appear as a vehicle ad with photo, price, mileage and condition. The same feed drives ads that build themselves from your stock, plus automatic rules. When a unit sells, its ads stop. When older stock needs moving, we can push it harder. We flag feed problems such as missing photos, dummy prices or wrong trim names before they waste money. Each ad lands on that car's own page on your site, not a general search results page.

Call tracking, lead routing and sales match back

Each department gets its own tracking numbers, so sales, service and parts calls are counted separately. Calls are recorded, so you can review them for missed opportunities. Web leads go into your CRM in ADF/XML format with the campaign source attached. Chat and text leads are tagged the same way, so nothing reaches your BDC without a source. Once a month we compare leads against your sold reports and repair orders. That shows which keywords led to actual sales and service visits. We send those sales back into Google Ads, so Google bids for buyers, not browsers.

Budget ranges for car dealer PPC

Spend is planned for each department and adjusted for the dealer calendar: tax refund season, the switch to new model years, holiday sales events and year end clearance. Service campaigns get a steady budget across the year. New and used budgets go up and down with OEM incentives and stock levels. Each rooftop has its own spending cap, so one store cannot use up the group budget. For franchise stores, co-op reimbursement can cover part of the cost when ads follow program rules. We keep records in the format your program asks for.

Process

How we work

  1. Step 1

Days 1 to 5: Store and stock intake

We list your rooftops, brands, DMS, CRM, inventory provider and any OEM co-op or Tier 3 rules, and get access to your existing ad accounts.

  2. Step 2

Week 2: Feed and tracking setup

We connect and test the Merchant Center vehicle feed, tracking numbers for each department, GA4 (Google Analytics) and lead delivery into your CRM.

  3. Step 3

Weeks 2 to 3: Campaign build by department

We build new, used, service, parts and brand campaigns, each with its own budget, ad copy and negative keyword list.

  4. Step 4

Weeks 3 to 4: Launch with daily stock checks

Once campaigns are live, we check every day that the feed matches your stock and review search terms. Sold units and irrelevant searches are removed quickly.

  5. Step 5

Monthly: Sales match back and budget shifts

We match leads to sold and repair order data, then move budget to the models and services that brought in business.

Questions

Questions we get asked

What is car dealer SEM?

It is paid search advertising for dealerships: Google and Bing ads that appear when people search for vehicles, used stock, financing or service near you. You pay per click, and campaigns are tied to your inventory so ads match what is on the lot.

How is dealership SEM different from dealership SEO?

SEM is paid. Ads appear as soon as campaigns go live and stop when you stop paying. SEO earns free rankings over time through your website and Google Business Profile. Most dealerships use SEM for stock and offers, and SEO for brand and service pages.

Can you run SEM for a dealer group with several rooftops?

Yes. Each rooftop gets its own location targeting, feed and tracking numbers, so your stores do not bid against each other. You also get reporting for the whole group.

Do you follow OEM co-op and Tier 3 advertising rules?

We build ads to the program guidelines you share, including approved wording, pricing disclaimers and logo use. We also keep records for reimbursement claims. Final program approval sits with your OEM.

Should a dealership bid on competitor dealer names?

In most cases you are allowed to bid on them, but you cannot use their trademarks in your ad text, and the leads are often weaker. We usually prefer bidding on competing models instead, which reaches shoppers who have not decided yet.

How do you prove which ads sold a car?

We match leads to sales. Each month we compare tracked leads and calls against your sold report, then send confirmed sales back into Google Ads. Your reports then show vehicles sold by campaign, not only leads.
