Mackay is a regional service city with three engines. The Bowen Basin coal mines sit inland along the Peak Downs Highway, and many local households work drive-in drive-out or fly-in fly-out rosters, so income and rental demand rise and fall with the mining cycle.
Sugar cane farms and mills ring the town, and the Bruce Highway carries traffic north and south through it.
The Pioneer River divides the city centre, South Mackay and East Mackay from North Mackay, Mount Pleasant and Andergrove, while the northern beaches of Slade Point, Bucasia, Eimeo, Blacks Beach and Shoal Point form their own patch.
Housing runs from high-set Queenslanders to low-set brick homes and newer estates. The tropical wet season brings storms, mould and heavy air conditioning use. Agents answer to the QLD Office of Fair Trading and trades hold QBCC licences, which stay with your firm.
