Melbourne looks flat on a map and feels very different from one suburb to the next. In the west, Wyndham and Melton are full of new estates, and families there drive the Princes Freeway or take the Werribee train line to work.
Dandenong, in the south-east, is a big commercial and industrial hub with older homes and a mixed community. Merri-bek, in the inner north, is terraces, weatherboards and low-rise flats around Brunswick and Coburg.
Boroondara, in the east, has Federation and Edwardian streets in Kew, Hawthorn and Camberwell, and owners there often compare several firms before they call. The city keeps growing, with ABS figures showing more than 100,000 new residents in a recent year.
That means plenty of demand, spread thinly over a very large area. Agents are licensed through Consumer Affairs Victoria, and trades hold their own licences. Prices are in A$, with GST at 10%.
