Stoke-on-Trent is not one town centre with suburbs around it. It is a federation of six towns, Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton, strung out along a north-south line, with Hanley as the main shopping centre.
Each still has its own high street and its own name, and people search with those names. Newcastle-under-Lyme is a separate borough on the western side, and Kidsgrove, Stone and the villages around them sit in Staffordshire rather than in the city.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council runs the city itself. The A500 runs the length of the city and joins the M6, while the A50 heads east towards Derby, so a van can cross the patch quickly off-peak and slowly at school time.
The housing is mostly older: Potteries terraces close to the old bottle kilns, inter-war semis, and newer estates around Trentham. Staffordshire University and Keele University add a steady rental market of student lets. Rightmove, Zoopla and OnTheMarket hold the searches from people browsing homes.
Estate agents need redress scheme membership, gas engineers need Gas Safe registration and electricians usually belong to a scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT.
