And we’re back with another edition of common on-site SEO mistakes.  As a San Francisco SEO specialist, HeyLead could probably write a book on the subject.  However, due to the ever evolving field of SEO, that book would probably be out of date as soon as it was published!  So, for now we’ll continue blogging about common mistakes relevant to today’s SEO experts.

Ignoring Long Tail Keywords

As voice activated search becomes more popular, keywords are becoming longer and beginning to sound like complete sentences.  Neglecting these long tail keywords can be detrimental to your SEO efforts.  Remember that voice search is not only popular with early adopters and tech savvy millennials, but it’s catching on with older users who may not be as comfortable with touchscreen typing or traditional computer programs.  Voice searches inherently take on a more conversational cadence than quick phrases typed in on a computer screen.  Be sure to take that difference into account.

Forgetting Alt Tags On Images

Images not only play an important role in improving the readability of your website, they can also be a valuable tool in boosting your site’s search engine ranking.  Although a search engine’s webcrawler doesn’t actually make note of the actual images on your site, they do, however, pay close attention to the alt tags associated with those images.  Make sure to use your keywords as alt tags for your visual content to take advantage of this fact.

Improper Anchor Text

Anchor text is the word or phrase that’s highlighted to indicate a hyperlink on a webpage.  Anchor text is typically blue and underlined (although it can be displayed in many different styles) and invites the user to click on the text to bring them to a related webpage.  As an SEO specialist it’s important to make your anchor text relevant to the link.  A simple “Click Here” may seem like a call to action, but to a search engine’s webcrawler those words have nothing to do with the content of the link.  Make sure to match your anchor text with the actual content of the related link.
